How I got here
My zeal and passion for Science and Scientific Research were triggered sometime in middle school. I knew from back then that I belonged in science. However, a couple of years into the system and I realised that I find communicating science more engaging than actually doing science; I changed tracks. Lucky for me, communications was, both, an interest and a skill.
Today, I work as visual science communicator for Cactus Communcations. In my part-time, I also accept freelance jobs that combine my strengths of communication and design in science. So, technically, I am still in science, although now, I only handle the creative end of it. And, gladly so.
Skills
I write, I draw, and I design.
Over a 15-year career, I’ve collected different skills by wearing many hats. I’ve learned that some science stories are best told with words, while others need a pure visual layout. Because I understand the research, the copy, and the pixels, I can see the whole picture. I know how to blend it all to choose the perfect medium for your science, whether that means leading a full strategy or jumping in as a focused designer.

Visual Science Communicator
My everyday is basically to take scientific research and make it simple and visual. It usually goes one of two ways: either I’m handed a storyboard from a content expert to bring to life, or I read the manuscript myself to figure out the best way to tell the story from scratch. Whether it’s a technical illustration, a graphical abstract, an infographic or a journal cover, I focus on making sure the science is easy to look at and even easier to understand. Imagine being given an infinite box of crayons and told to push the boundaries — except that I actually know how to channel that chaos into impactful design. Couple that with getting to read the latest in science straight from the source – before most of the world even hears about it. How awesome is that?

Science Communicator
This role unfolded more-or-less inadvertently. Those who knew me would call up, requesting favours. The favours grew into jobs. The jobs grew into this role. Today, I am blessed to be associated with some of the best in the industry working on projects ranging from content editing and writing to designs – all in the field of Science.
